Who We Are
History & Vision
The call: After 19 years of youth ministry, Phillip McClure answered a call to resign from his position at a loving, growing church. Not sure what was next, Phillip and Theresa wept over the leaving and prayed over the future. Within weeks, several others sensing a call to a 'new church' (and not sure what that really meant!) began a journey that became River Valley.
The start: On April 20, 2008 River Valley pioneers showed up at the Holiday Inn in downtown Fort Smith. We started by cleaning up dozens of beer bottles and other 'leftovers' from a class reunion the night before in our rented ballroom (the staff forgot we were coming, but jumped in and we were even on time with the service). We expected only a handful. We got several handfuls and 67 people worshipped together as 'River Valley Community Church' for the first time!
The 'spot': We searched for a 'home' while carting our PA system and Children's Ministry gear into the hotel for three months. In August, we landed in 'Chaffee Crossing.' Fort Chaffee had been a booming Army base back in the day, even trimming up Elvis' hair before he went off to war. After the base was closed, 'Chaffee Crossing' became a area planned for redevelopment for business, industrial, and residential use. We have purchased land on Wells Lake rd. and hope to build in the near future.
The vision: To be a healthy, Bible teaching community church in this growing area.
The mission of River Valley Community Church is to lead people to become fully-devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
